Work well-being

In close cooperation with the Institute of Sociology of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, between 2004 and 2015, the Occupational Safety Research Institute (VÚBP) created a summary indicator of the subjectively perceived quality of working life (KPŽ; Subjective Quality of Working Life, SQWLi). The goal was to create simple, comprehensible, summary information about KPŽ based on high-quality theoretical and empirical data. The assembled compact research tool was presented in the form of a battery of simple questionnaire items, from the results of which it is possible to calculate a simple index, which will also allow for regional, sectoral, temporal and other comparisons with the smallest possible number of numerical data. The SQWLi was subsequently used as part of nationally representative surveys in the Czech Republic to monitor the development of the quality of working life over time, but also for a detailed analysis of KPŽ factors from the point of view of different parts of the working population (e.g. by gender or age).

In 2020, the Work Safety Research Institute launched the Quality of Work Life 2020 project, following on from previous projects in the field, with the main goal of updating the time series of data collected in previous years. Although the SQWLi is invaluable as a tool for assessing quality of working life with a high degree of consistency over time, its focus is relatively narrowly linked to classic hard factors of quality of working life (e.g. earnings and technical equipment at work) and does not offer insight into the current topics in the working world, such as the impact of working from home, and their relationship to the overall quality of working life. Due to the constant development of society, forms of work and, among other things, also the far-reaching effects of COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, which led to the closure of a large part of the Czech and global economy and a number of changes in the working conditions of workers across sectors, the research for the project was KPŽ 2020 has been further expanded to include categories for which historical data do not exist, but will nevertheless enable other methods of analysis, especially in the economic direction, and will also provide information on a wider range of topics related to the quality of working life.
