The best way to ensure workplace safety is early and effective prevention

The employer is obliged to create a safe and health-safe working environment and working conditions by appropriate organisation of occupational safety and health (OSH) and by taking measures to prevent risks. The aim of these measures is to minimise the likelihood of an occupational accident, damage to an employee’s health or other workplace incident. One measure is, for example, the personal protective equipment (PPE) allocation designed to protect persons. They are intended to protect against specific hazards and to prevent or reduce exposure to hazardous and harmful occupational factors and work environment. Successful business managers have come to understand that investing in OSH definitely pays off, both economically and in terms of a good rating as an employer who values the employees´ health. These employers have thus bet on prevention and realised its economic and business benefits.

However, some employers still put the economic side of the business first and see OSH as more of an economic burden. Often they argue that the likelihood of an occupational accidents or damage to an employee’s health is low, so investing time and money in this area is not worthwhile. However, statistics show that one fatal workplace accident per month is caused by missing, insufficient or inappropriate PPE.
